  5. W3Fools – A W3Schools Intervention

If anybody ever advised you to go to W3Schools in order to learn about web design, here’s something that you might want to look into.

W3Fools is a collection of resources that explain why this is such a bad place for any newcomer to web design.

We are passionate about the web, learning, and craftsmanship. We want you, as web designers and developers, to be successful in your careers. We feel, though, that W3Schools is harming the community with inaccurate information. Like any other authoritative educational resource, W3Schools should both hold itself to, and be held to, the highest standards.

We hope we can illuminate why W3Schools is a troublesome resource, why their faulty information is a detriment to the web, and what you (and they) can do about it.

Interestingly enough, Aspektas website (run by Martin Kwok, who points out that he’s “a moderator on the official W3Schools Forums, but have no vested interest or control over the content on the w3schools.com”) published an article which also explains why W3Fools attack was…well…foolish.

Firstly, I do agree that the content on W3Schools.com is not as good as it could be. The sheer amount of content on the site probably takes significant effort to constantly update, and parts of it do often fall behind. I believe, however, that the way the W3Fools site attempts to “fix” the problem is detestable, as it is a malicious, entirely negative attack aimed not at helping fix the problem at all, but rather aggravating it. They make bold claims, in many cases completely unsourced, and rely on people to take their claims at face value, and to respond sensationally instead of rationally.
